Jet Li - Iron Monkey

  Iron Monkey
Year: 1993
Director: Yuen Woo-ping
Stars: Rongguang Yu, Donnie Yen, Jean Wang, Tsang Sze-Man, Yee Kwan Yan, James Wong, Hou Hsiao, Yuen Shun-Yee, Fai Li
Genre: Martial Arts, Historical
Rating:  8 (from 3 votes)
Review: A classy piece of traditional martial arts, Iron Monkey was one of the best films made during the genre's revival in the early ’90s. It doesn't quite have the epic sweep of Tsui Hark's Once Upon a Time in China films (Hark produced and co-wrote this one too), but the combination of warm humour and electrifying action is a winning one.
Rongguang Yu plays Dr Yang, a friendly, resourceful man of medicine who dishes out free treatment to the poor, whilst charging top whack to those who can afford it. By night Dr Yang becomes Iron Monkey, a kind of Cantonese Batman, dishing out rough justice to those who mistreat the poor and needy, primarily the royal guards of evil Governor Cheng (James Wong). When renowned fighter Wong Kei-Ying (Donnie Yen) comes to town, he and his 12-year-old son Wong Fei-Hung (Tsang Sze-Man, actually a girl) are arrested by Governor Cheng. Kei-Ying is only released on the condition that his son remains in jail until he has captured Iron Monkey.
Wong Fei-Hung is the Robin Hood-esque defender of the ordinary man so popular in Chinese legend – this was Jet Li's character in the Once Upon a Time in China films, and it is his life as a youngster with which Iron Monkey partly concerns itself. His father is shown to be a strict disciplinarian, making his son constantly train and recite proverbs, believing normal 12-year-old behaviour to be beneath him. In Dr Yang, Fei-Hung finds a much more kindly father figure, and he works out Yang's identity as Iron Monkey long before his dad does. Tsang Sze-man proves to be as good at kung fu as she is at pretending to be a boy, and her fight scenes are as impressive as much of the 'adult' combat.
Still, it's Rongguang Yu and especially the great Donnie Yen who provides the chief reason for watching. Director Yuen Woo-ping is now best known for his fight choreography on the likes of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and The Matrix, but Iron Monkey was his 18th film as director, and the action sequences here remain as exciting as anything he's worked on since. Many of them use the extravagant wire-work witnessed in Crouching Tiger, allowing Yen, Yu and their adversaries to spin and glide through the air with the smallest of effort. There's some good swordplay sequences, and just as Once Upon a Time in China climaxed with an astonishing Woo-ping directed fight in a room of ladders, so Iron Monkey ends with Yen, Yu and evil monk Yee Kwan Yan battling it out on a series of upturned wooden poles in a burning room, the sequence getting increasingly fraught as more and more poles disappear into the flames.
The plotting remains simplistic and as is often the case, the Eastern mix of melodrama and broad comedy can seem a little strange to Western eyes. But there are a number of subtley played non-action scenes which do broaden the emotional scope, such as a cooking session between Kei-Ying, Dr Yang and Yang's assistant Miss Orchid (Jean Wang), while the seemingly platonic relationship that the doctor has with Miss Orchid is nicely ambiguous. Followed by a very average sequel in 1996, once again directed by Woo-ping and starring Donnie Yen, but related to this film in name only.

A police raid on a Jakarta tenement building turns into a non-stop bloodbath when the drug dealer who owns it unleashes a furious barrage of fists, bullets, and blades, leaving the few remaining survivors of the invading SWAT team to fight their way up to the top and end the psychotic criminal's violent reign once and for all. Expectant father Rama (Iko Uwais) is an honest cop with deadeye aim and killer fighting skills. Following orders from his lieutenant -- a respected police veteran and mastermind of the ambitious raid -- Rama leads his heavily-armed team into the building silently and stealthily. Their mission is to take down Tama (Ray Sahetapy), a vicious criminal kingpin who uses the building as a shelter for both his many customers and his small army of loyal dealers and killers. Even the bravest cops in the city have never dared to breach Tama's fortress, and once the team's cover is blown, it quickly becomes apparent why; almost immediately, half of the team is shredded in a vicious barrage of gunfire and machetes. The exits have all been blocked, and with Tama's men closing in fast Rama's only hope is to keep going up and take out anyone who gets in his path. Meanwhile, Tama realizes that some of the cops have managed to survive the initial assault, so he unleashes two of his best men to stop them dead in their tracks. With his team cut down to a mere handful and his munitions exhausted, the determined cop vows to complete his mission by whatever means necessary. The Raid made its North American debut at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival, where it quickly gained buzz thanks to an enthusiastic audience reception, while also garnering the Cadillac People's Choice Midnight Madness Award. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

The VOD Report: 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,' 'The Sitter,' 'Battle Royale,' Plus the Movies Expiring from Netflix

Cable On DemandCable offers VOD programming (same-day-as-disc releases, older titles and pre-theatrical exclusives) for rent, usually for 24- or 48-hour periods at prices from about $2.99 for older titles to $9.99 for new or exclusive releases. Since cable offers a direct connection from your cable provider, its VOD offerings are usually less prone to outside interference and can be streamed with surround sound and 3D when available.

Publicly shamed investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig) finds an unlikely partner in gothic computer hacker Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara) to help him solve the disappearance of the family member of a wealthy industrialist in David Fincher's riveting English-language remake of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Mara deservedly earned an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of Salander, and she and Craig exude unlikely chemistry on-screen in this thrilling mystery that is available the same day as DVD and Blu-ray.

The Muppets—including Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie and Gonzo—have gone their separate ways but reunite after being persuaded by a new Muppet, Walter, to put on a telethon and save the old Muppet Theater in The Muppets. This first Muppets adventure in 12 years won the Oscar for Best Original Song and features plenty of nods to the original show for lifelong fans as well as Glee-ful song-and-dance numbers by human stars Amy Adams and Jason Segel.

The Sitter stars Jonah Hill as a suspended college student who, coerced into babysitting three rambunctious kids, ends up carting them around Manhattan for a debaucherous and dangerous night. This sporadically funny comedy—available to stream in both its R-rated theatrical and unedited versions—tries to be unnecessarily earnest and gooey at the end, but it doubles as an urgent birth-control reminder.

In the previous weeks, both the Gary Oldman Cold War-era spy movie Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Steven Speilberg's animated feature The Adventures of Tintin have been available on other streaming services to download to own. Now both are also available for rent on cable On Demand, including a 3D version of The Adventures of Tintin.

A carjacking leads to more violence for a college student (Christian Serratos) and her rich friend (Brittany Snow) in the dramatic thriller 96 Minutes, a movie that just premiered at the SXSW Film Festival and is available to rent on cable On Demand on March 22 before its theatrical release.

Amazon/iTunes/Vudu/BlockbusterThese four services stream movies to your TV via computer, Blu-ray player, game console or other compatible connected device. Like cable VOD, they offer new titles for rent from about $3.99 to $6.99, but, unlike cable, they also offer the option of downloading the movie to own from about $14.99 to $19.99. Usually movies presented in HD cost a bit more than streaming a SD version.

Amazon, Vudu and iTunes currently offer The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, The Muppets and The Sitter for rent and/or download while Blockbuster has all three except The Muppets. If you're not sure whether or not you want to roll the dice with The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Vudu offers a free 10-minute preview for you to investigate before purchasing.

Before you see The Hunger Games in theaters this Friday, check out its bloody exciting 2000 Japanese precursor Battle Royale about a ninth-grade class of students that is outfitted with exploding neck collars and forced to hunt each other to death on a remote island by government mandate. The controversial movie was banned in many countries for years but is available today on Blu-ray as well as on Amazon, Vudu and iTunes.

Teen heroin addicts barricade themselves inside an abandoned farmhouse after the death of their friend in an attempt to kick the junk only to become a part of an ultra-secret government experiment in Psychotica, which is available to rent or own only on Vudu.

Peter Facinelli plays a New York pickpocket who is confronted by a woman with whom he had a passionate one-night affair and told of her pregnancy in Loosies, which is available to rent or own on Amazon and iTunes.

You can stream with Redbox-ish pricing on Vudu with the service's 99-Cent Movie of the Day. Today's feature is the intoxicating Oscar-winning comedy Sideways, which features Paul Giamatti and Thomas Hayden Church as best friends who go on a weekend to California wine country before one's wedding.

NetflixNetflix's all-you-can-stream buffet costs $7.99 per month and gives instant access to thousands of movies and television shows via a computer, Blu-ray player, game console or other compatible device. Don't depend on Netflix streaming for same-day-as-disc releases, however. Instead, Netflix offers catalog titles, vintage movies, indie flicks and TV episodes with unlimited access for one monthly price.

Who killed Rosie Larson? That is the question posed by the TV series The Killing, the first season of which is now available to stream on Netflix just after it debuted on DVD and Blu-ray and as the second season is set to debut on AMC on April 1. Also new to Netflix's Watch Instantly are six seasons of Saved by the Bell, Jackie Chan in 1911, and Victor Salva's creepy horror flick Jeepers Creepers.

Notable titles expiring from Netflix's Watch Instantly this week include Contact, How to Get Ahead in Advertising, P.S., Stander, Whale Rider, Bad Seed, The Prisoner, Basket Case, Invader From Mars, Green Dragon and The Secret.
